How Seasonal Allergies Affect Oral Health

Spring brings blooming flowers, warmer days and for many Canadians, the return of seasonal allergies. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure are common symptoms, but did you know allergies can also affect your oral health?

At Monarch Dentistry, we believe in taking a whole-body approach to dental care. Here’s how seasonal allergies might be impacting your mouth, and what you can do to protect your smile.

How Allergies Affect Your Mouth

1. Dry Mouth
Allergies often cause nasal congestion, leading people to breathe through their mouths especially during sleep. Combine this with antihistamines (which reduce saliva production), and dry mouth becomes a serious issue. Saliva is essential for washing away food particles, neutralizing acids, and protecting against decay.

2. Tooth Pain or Sensitivity
Sinus pressure from allergies can create discomfort in your upper back teeth, which share nerve pathways with the sinuses. It may feel like a toothache, but the pain is referred from your sinuses, not decay or infection. However, it’s always a good idea to let your dentist evaluate any persistent tooth pain.

3. Postnasal Drip & Bad Breath
When mucus from your sinuses drains into the back of your throat (postnasal drip), it can leave an unpleasant taste and odor. Chronic bad breath is often made worse by allergy-related mucus buildup, especially if brushing and flossing aren’t removing it effectively.

4. Sore or Swollen Gums
Inflammation in the mouth can be aggravated by allergens, especially pollen. Some people experience irritated gums, even when their brushing habits are solid.

Tips to Protect Oral Health During Allergy Season

  • Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to combat dry mouth and rinse away allergens.
  • Use a Humidifier
Keeping indoor air moist can reduce mouth breathing and sinus dryness.
  • Rinse After Antihistamines
Over-the-counter allergy meds can dry you out. Rinsing with water or an alcohol-free mouthwash can help keep your mouth fresh.
  • Visit Your Dentist if Symptoms Persist
If you’re experiencing unusual tooth pain, dry mouth, or gum irritation during allergy season, we’re here to help rule out dental problems.

Allergies are tough enough don’t let them take a toll on your oral health. At Monarch Dentistry, we understand the unique ways seasonal changes affect your smile. If you’re dealing with dry mouth, pain, or bad breath this allergy season, let’s talk.
